FGCU Marrowthon - Please Note --> This is a Past Event.
Description: National Marrow Donor Program, in conjunction with Community Blood Centers of South Florida, has partnered with students from Florida Gulf Coast University to host an FGCU Marrowthon on campus between the Wellness Center and Howard Hall.
The event, an FGCU capstone project, is about fulfilling an unmet need and trying to make a difference, with the mindset of thinking globally and acting locally. Integrated Core Senior Seminar Professor Courtney Dwyer Satkoski encouraged students to explore avenues of service where students felt they could contribute to a cause. One group from Satkoski’s class is directing their efforts to help raise awareness about the need for bone marrow and cord blood donors by helping recruit students to register for the NMDP donor list.
NMDP representatives will be on site to answer questions about becoming a bone marrow donor and will perform cheek swabs in a secluded area for students wishing to sign up with the NMDP Registry. Complimentary food and beverages will be provided at, along with several raffle items from local businesses for students who register to become a bone marrow donor.
Donors must be in good health and over 18 years old. After joining, donors remain on the registry until they reach the age of 61 unless they request to be removed. Donating is voluntary, even after joining the registry.
The NMDP works to connect more than 6,000 patients suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases in need of a bone marrow or cord blood transplant with matching donors across the country. Since 1987, they have helped more than 30,000 patients receive the necessary bone marrow and/or cord blood transplants to survive. On average, more than 300 patients receive transplants through the program each month.
