11 Tips to Promote Productivity In The Office

Hey there! Victoria here from Clean and Sassy. As a small business owner I've created a personalized office space to encourage effectiveness, collaboration and idea generation. An office can impact yourself and your employees' performance, mood and efficiency. In fact, "Research by Exeter University’s School of Psychology found that employees who have control over the design and layout of their workspace are not only happier and healthier -- they’re also up to 32% more productive." So, in honor of Spring Cleaning, I'm sharing all things inspirational to help promote productivity in the office whether you're at home or in a business setting.

"Wherever you are, be all there!"

In the days I spent working in a professional office,  I always had to bring a touch of who I am to work because it helped me get through the day and more importantly, it made me want to be there. It's certainly not easy if you can't surround yourself with the things you love. Daily reminders are a reflection of your productivity, attitude and well being. Remember the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words!?" It's also something very simple yet, makes a huge difference. Add your favorite photos to your desk if you can. I wasn't able to bring photos of my family but I printed out a saying like this and tacked it on the board in our office.

Anything to make you smile deserves to be there.  The littlest things will do that.

Here's some tips to allow you to become more productive in your work environment:
  1. Create that invitation: Whether it's flowers, plants or a betta fish, that's what you want to see when you walk in every single day
  2. Stage an office with your design touch: If you like a decorative pillow, add it to your chair, or even on a bookshelf. I prefer small pillows.
  3. A great office must smell good: This is important. Smells increase your mood. So add a burner, essential oils, or even a sachet under your desk/in a drawer.
  4. Coffee: I am an avid coffee lover, so this is what increases my productivity but if you don't drink it; perhaps a small dish of coffee beans (going back to smells) to set on your desk
  5. For the social media savvy - carry a pocket cam: (this can be your phone) Take some photos of your current location. Popular hashtags to share on Instagram are #currentmood #mondaymotivation #dailyphoto #inspiremyinstagram. These can be photos of your mug, a glimpse of an assignment you're working on, anything that motivates you to share your day. If you think, 'Oh, I need to share this', then chances are you will actually get it done. And most likely you'll inspire a fellow worker or social media follower. Be the inspiration
  6. Natural light: Open blinds if you can to bring nature indoors. However, if you do not have windows make sure you have bright lights (and the betta fish) on your shelf, that we talked about
  7. Keep it clean: Probably my favorite tip (because I'm a cleaner). Don't let things pile up. De-clutter, throw the old bottle of water away, keep the plants watered, cut off dying leaves, organize the books in a decorative manner. Staying clean can help you stay focused and on task.
  8. Hang a piece of art: vibrant colors increase productivity and mood!
  9. Keep your planner or calendar out: This will give you a chance to look at what's going on for the day, help you plan out tomorrow and jot down ideas and thoughts for the week
  10. Clocks: I love screensaver ones because they're just awesome but a clock in every office is a must
  11. Stay well hydrated: water helps nourish the brain making you more alert and energized. Keep a water bottle at your desk to remind you to drink. Plus it encourages steps and serves as an energy booster walking to and from the drinking fountain.

Make sure you have your days well balanced. For many individuals, mornings are more productive than afternoons because you may feel sluggish after lunch. Schedule meetings, prepare a fresh pot of coffee, have afternoon team huddles, capture photos, take a break and then get back to what needs to be done for the day.

A productive day in the office translates into a nice evening at home with a reflection of a job well done. So remember, "Wherever you are, be all there!" And if something doesn't get done today, there's always tomorrow.

Thanks for pointing out that in an office staying clean can help you stay focused and on task. I think it would be smart to hire an office cleaning service that could help you keep things clean. I think that that would help make sure that you and your employees could stay focused while also not having to worry about cleaning things themselves.

If you run a small business, you may not have any staff dedicated to cleaning your office. While that can sometimes work in the short term, the cleaning needs of your facility will change over time. Whether your business gets larger or simply stays in the same office for a while, you may notice that the level of cleanliness will slowly decrease. Without the occasional deep clean or regular light cleaning, dirt, dust, grime, and debris will slowly fill your office.

I appreciated it when you shared that it is important to make sure that the office is clean in order for you to be productive throughout the day. It is best for companies to acquire a service that can help clean the office regularly so the employees can work efficiently in the best environment. I would like to think if a company is thinking of improving the productivity of the workers, it should look for a cleaning service that is experienced and reliable.

It made sense when you said that keeping an office clean and free of clutter can help keep workers focused. In my opinion, it's a good idea for larger offices to invest in mobile shelving for the workspace to optimize storage and allow for easier access to items. I enjoyed reading your article and learning about office productivity, so thanks for taking the time to share!
